Essendon to move to Keilor Park

Essendon will be moving from Windy Hill to Keilor Park.

I have got friends at Keilor Park F.C who have told me that two weeks ago the club voted in favour of Essendon Football Club building world class facilities at their premises.

There is a press conference at Windy Hill at 2.30pm today, if this is not to announce Bomber Thompson's arrival back home then the move to Keilor Park will be confirmed.

The Norm Smith Committee got both medalists wrong this year

The Norm Smith Committee got both medalists wrong this year.

Taking nothing away from the great performances by Lenny Hayes & Scott Pendlebury, I think Brendan Goddard should have won the Norm Smith in Grand Final 1 & Steele Sidebottom should have won it in the Grand Final Replay.

Good Call ? Bad Call ?

Tanking And Premiership

Interesting article that might make some people at the AFL blood boil ...

DALE Thomas was Collingwood’s best in one Grand Final. Scott Pendelbury won the “Normie” in the next.

What to do those two blokes have in common?

They were both selected at the pointy end of the draft in 2005. Top five, in fact.

Thomas went at No.2 and Pendlebury at No.5.

How the hell did the Magpies snare both?

In case you’ve forgotten, the Pies embarked on some crafty list management.

You could call it tanking, actually.

In that season, only five years ago, the Pies lost 10 of their last 11 (and their final eight) to finish on five wins.

By sneaking in under the five-and-a-half win threshold, they gained a priority pick, which went on Thomas. Once the actual draft started, they gleefully took Pendelbury at No.5.

These two are the future of the club for at least the next eight to 10 years.

Has there ever been a better advert for playing kids (tanking) and loading up for a future assault on a flag?

Promising youngsters such as Heath Shaw, Harry O'Brien and Sean Rusling were rewarded with games at the time.

But many other debutants, including Ben Davies, Chris Egan, David Fanning, Brent Hall and Adam Iacobucci sank quickly from sight after playing their role in that bizarre season.

The Pies did what they had to to. Plain and simple.

Just like Melbourne did what it had to do last year, to pick up Tom Scully and Jack Trengove. You just can’t underestimate the importance of picking up two gun midfielders so early on.

We are not taking anything away from the overall recruiting of Derek Hine. The guy looks a genius now.

But to put it simply, it took the Pies five years to cash in to cash in on a big tank.

Using that as a measure, expect Dean Bailey to be a premiership coach in 2014.

Collingwood wouldn't have won the flag without Malthouse

Collingwood wouldn't have won the flag without Mick Malthouse. Good call, bad call?
I believe the Pies won yesterday because their structures and the way they set up was superior to the Saints. Malthouse has got this side to be very disciplined, and they didn't allow the Saints to play their game.
So my question is, did the Pies win because they had the best team this year, or could Malthouse have taken any one of 5-6 sides to the flag with the same game plan?

Trading Players vs Trading Draft Picks

Here is a very interesting comment I was reading online ... thought it was a very worthwhile post and one that deserves a thread all of its own.

Poster highlights a very practical way to look at the trade period. Obviously the guidelines(examples) given may marginally move from year to year, if the draft was shallower or deeper, however the concept sounds very sound.

Basically trade week isn't about trading players, it's about trading AFL games.

Here's what I mean:
Taz has 2 or 3 good years left: he's worth 60 AFL games
Schammer has 5 years left, but will struggle to make a best 22: he's worth say 20 AFL games
Fraser has 2 years left & won't be best 22: he's worth 0 AFL games

You see how it works.
Keep dreaming about young, solid defenders with 5+ good years left, but the only way we'll get a trade like that is if they are rubbish.

Since there's no like for like player, go for a draft pick.

Now picks are also equal to games too:
Round one, gets you a 150 game player
Round two, a bit more iffy - you probably only average out to 100 games
Round three and above = 50 games

So likely only get a round 3 pick for Taz (maybe round 2 because the compromised draft makes them worth less)

Wellman Joins Hird Back At Bomberland

Geez what a surprise that is ... Wellman Joins Hird back at Bomberland

FORMER Essendon premiership player Sean Wellman has been named a Bombers assistant coach in the first appointment made in the James Hird era. The club has wasted little time in building a coaching panel to support Hird, who was appointed senior coach on Tuesday.

Essendon football manager Paul Hamilton said he was delighted to welcome Wellman, who had been an assistant at Melbourne, back to the club.

''Following the appointment of Hird as the club's senior coach, we have begun the process of putting the best possible coaching group around him,'' Hamilton said.

''Sean has had wonderful experience at the Bulldogs under Rodney Eade and at Melbourne under Dean Bailey - two coaches that we have the utmost respect for - and we think he will make a valuable contribution to the club.''

Tigers Forced To Sell More Home Games

Looks like the Tigers are set to sell even more home games next year ... Personally its not a trend I like to see ... always fraught with danger. However, business is business and sometimes AFL supporters just have to realise some clubs will be forced into these decisions for the sake of money.

Great opportunity now for other clubs to get more home games at the MCG.

Mark Bomber Thompson Director Of Coaching At Essendon

Sounds like the drums are beating ...

Quote:

ESSENDON appears poised to leave Geelong in turmoil, after pulling off a massive coup by poaching dual Cats premiership coach Mark Thompson back to Windy Hill.

Thompson, a past Essendon captain, dual best-and-fairest winner and multiple premiership player, has agreed to work as James Hird's boss in what is an extraordinary boost for the flagging Bombers, which have lost their way since Kevin Sheedy was axed three years ago.

The imminent announcement that Thompson will next year be the Bombers' director of coaching, above senior coach-in-waiting James Hird, is expected to rock the foundations of Skilled Stadium, where Thompson is contracted as the Cats' senior coach for another season.

Geelong has long maintained an emphatic stance that Thompson would not be leaving this year.

Andrew Walker Trade Talk

afl.com.au
CARLTON’S Andrew Walker is being targeted by the Western Bulldogs, and has been given permission by the Blues to speak to the Dogs
The 24-year-old has already met with Adelaide and there is much speculation that he will go to either one of these clubs.

The scenario for the Dogs is complicated because they will be using their first two pics - in a draft already affected by the arrival of Gold Coast - on father-son picks Mitch Wallis and Thomas Liberatore.

However, they do have the use of their compensatory first-round pick that they received for Jarrod Harbrow's departure to the Suns.

The Blues have rejected a direct swap for out-of-favour Bulldog Andrejs Everitt, but it looks as though he will be traded out as he looks for a fresh start, along with Brennan Stack and Josh Hill, while the Dogs are apparently interested in Geelong's Nathan Djerrkura, who is chasing more senior opportunity.
